Message from the Board – Joe Watts, President

Greetings!

The Board of Directors continue to work diligently on improving our neighborhood. At this time many tasks have been completed at the pool and at our main entrances; however, the corona virus has taken a toll on our activities. We will keep you updated about reopening the office, the clubhouse, and the pool. The Directors will follow guidelines established by local and state governments. Our April Board meeting was cancelled, and the May meeting is not confirmed at this time. The Directors may choose to do some type of remote meeting. If you have an item that needs to be discussed, please email the office and we will respond.

Our neighborhood has been successful in following the stay at home directive. Much yard work has been completed, many golfers, walkers and bicyclist are outside each day. We appreciate the strong effort to keep our neighborhood safe!

Below is just a little something to keep in mind.

The Mouse Trap

A mouse looked through the crack in the wall to see the farmer and his wife open a package.

“What food might this contain?” The mouse wondered – he was devastated to discover it was a mousetrap.

Retreating to the farmyard, the mouse proclaimed the warning: “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”

The chicken clucked and scratched, raised her head and said, “Mr. Mouse, I can tell this is a grave concern to you, but it is of no consequence to me. I cannot be bothered by it.”

The mouse turned to the pig and told him, “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”

The pig sympathized, but said, “I am so very sorry Mr. Mouse, but there is nothing I can do about it but pray. Be assured you are in my prayers.”

The mouse turned to the cow and said “There is a mousetrap in the house! There is a mousetrap in the house!”

The cow said, “Wow, Mr. Mouse. I’m sorry for you, but it’s no skin off my nose.”

So, the mouse returned to the house, head down and dejected, to face the farmer’s mousetrap alone.

That very night a sound was heard throughout the house — like the sound of a mousetrap catching its prey.

The farmer’s wife rushed to see what was caught. In the darkness, she did not see it was a venomous snake whose tail the trap had caught.

The snake bit the farmer’s wife. The farmer rushed her to the hospital, and she returned home with a fever. Everyone knows you treat a fever with fresh chicken soup, so the farmer took his hatchet to the farmyard for the soup’s main ingredient.

But his wife’s sickness continued, so friends and neighbors came to sit with her around the clock. To feed them, the farmer butchered the pig.

The farmer’s wife did not get well; she died. So many people came for her funeral, the farmer had the cow slaughtered to provide enough meat for all of them.

The mouse looked upon it all from his crack in the wall with great sadness.

So, the next time you hear someone is facing a problem and think it doesn’t concern you, remember — when one of us is threatened, we are all at risk.

We are all involved in this journey called life. We must keep an eye out for one another and make an extra effort to encourage one another!

COVID-19 Impact on NCDOT Revenues Forces Delays of Most Projects

RALEIGH – As people across North Carolina have taken lifesaving measures to stop the spread of COVID-19, traffic volumes have plummeted, causing at least a $300 million budget shortfall for the N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) for this fiscal year (ending June 30).

Because NCDOT revenue is fully funded through the Motor Fuels Tax, Highway Use Tax and DMV fees, this significant impact has forced the department to notify local governments, stakeholders and the general public that all but about 50 major projects scheduled to start in the next 12 months are delayed.

Projects moving forward are funded by GARVEE bonds, BUILD NC bonds and federal grants.

A list of the projects that are still scheduled to be awarded in the next year is available on the NCDOT website. The list of projects that have schedule changes can be found here.

These changes do not affect construction projects already underway or that have already been awarded.

The department is taking other significant steps to decrease expenditures, including:

The department is in the process of developing plans for potential furloughs and a Reduction in Force (RIF). Those plans are not yet complete and no decision has been made at this time to enact them.

ACC Corner – Joe Martere, ACC Chairperson

As you aware the POA and the ACC offices are closed, but it is still the owner’s obligation to submit to the ACC all requests for ANY work to be done on the exterior of their homes. Also, any tree removals MUST be submitted and approved by the ACC before cutting down trees.

The ACC is working on a limited basis and will address any applications it receives in the order they are submitted. Please drop your completed form in the mail slot of the POA office door. The ACC will contact you, discuss your request and come out and approve it if possible. We are limiting our exposure as all of you are, and do not want to make any unnecessary contacts in order protect us all.

If your request can possibly wait a few more weeks, please wait. We would like to be able to address those that are necessary in the time constraints we have.

.

Please do not call my home with your questions or requests. I am unable to conduct ACC business from home. As always you can call the office and leave a message for me or e-mail me directly at: acc@carolinashores.net.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this trying time.

Recreation Committee – Sue Hensler

Due to the Corona virus the May Wine in the Park and the Memorial Day Picnic have been cancelled. We know everyone is itching to get out and socialize. There will be celebrations under the pavilion when we know it can be done safely. Thanks for your patience while we make these critical decisions.

Tennis News – Bob Anthony

During these trying times Open Tennis is practicing social distancing as best as they can and still enjoying tennis. Just a reminder that open tennis happens every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9:00 a.m. The time is scheduled to change to 8:30 a.m. on Memorial Day; however, if the weather gets too warm before Memorial Day, the starting time of open tennis may move to 8:30 a.m. If this occurs, the new starting time will be posted at the tennis courts. If there is any doubt about the starting time, please feel free to call me, Bob Anthony, at (910) 579-9666. Hope to see you out there.

Knit ‘n Natter – Diana Mardall

Our knitting group is suspended until further notice. Did you know Carolina Shores has an evening knitting/crocheting/needlework group? We meet every other Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the POA boardroom off the kitchen. If you knit, crochet or do other needlework, stop by and join us. We’d love to see new faces.

The group meets and shares patterns and expertise. We work on a variety of projects including sweaters, cardigans, afghans, shawls, cross stitch, arm knitting (that was a blast!), etc. Usually we even have dessert!

If you have any questions, email me at limeylady70@gmail.com or call me at 910-575-7804.

New Horizons Carla Urban

MCj04398570000[1]The New Horizons Singles Group is in the same situation as all individual residents of the entire area, so we have been learning one of the first commands that a puppy learns. That is Sit and Stay. There has been a slew of jokes connected with this virus crisis, but we all know how serious it really is. So, with the POA being closed for activities, we will not be able to hold our regular May meeting there.

Our end of the year picnic which is always held on the second Tuesday in May had to be cancelled and hopefully we can have it in June instead. We will have to wait until the June bulletin is issued to decide on that.

In the meantime, wear your gloves and masks. If you are making your own masks, you can place a coffee filter inside the fold for a bit more protection. It is not the most comfortable thing to breathe through, but every little bit helps.

Hope that all of you are finding things to do to keep your minds occupied and less stressed. Yard works seems to be a great diversion as well as productive and creative.

Please take all the precautions necessary so that this causes as little pain as possible.

Our April meeting was cancelled due to COVID-19 social distancing restrictions. Our next meeting is scheduled for Friday, May 15, at 10:00 a.m. Any updates about the meeting, including the location, will be sent out to members at a later date.

We plan to discuss two books, The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See and Where the Wind Leads: A Refugee Family's Miraculous Story of Loss, Rescue, and Redemption by Vinh Chung.

Care Team – Beverly Rowse

http://thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/customer-care-team-d-isolated-43443409.jpgThe Care Team now has twenty-three (23) people available to help neighbors in need when a request comes to me. If you want to be a part of this team or if you no longer want to be on the list, please let me know. When a call for help comes to me, I reach out to the members on NextDoor. I don't get very many calls for help, but people are so very grateful for the assistance they get! It really doesn't take much to volunteer. Help with a small chore at home, an occasional ride, a temporary need for dog walking, etc. is usually what is needed.

So, neighbors, continue to let me know if you need help and I'll do my best to find someone. You don't have to be on NextDoor to request help. You can call me at 919-271-3005
